GK and the Renegades, 29th February 2008, Liverpool Carling Academy

There’s a sense of anticipation in the air as the crowd wait for GK and the Renegades to appear. This is a hometown gig for the Liverpool band, and judging from the mass of people rammed up against the barriers the band’s intense marketing has paid off. As the lights dim the cheers and screams (eat your heart out Westlife) only get louder and the foursome take to the stage to a roaring crowd. Bursting straight into their opening number they are on form from the outset. Frontman, GK bounces around the stage like a man possessed whilst the bass player throws ‘rock’ shapes and seems to have boundless energy as he jumps, runs and dances his way around his side of the stage.

This is a band that are pretty much at the top of the unsigned game, penning indie pop singalongs that have just enough power in them to win over the rock fans. The beauty here though lies in the charms of GK as a frontman. Effortlessly chatting to the crowd, interacting with fellow band members and actually singing, yes, singing…it seems to be a revelation these days in bands. The crowd seem to know every lyric and sing along tirelessly. When the band bravely play a couple of new numbers the audience are right there with them, and even partake in a little singalong with GK. The stand out song of the night has to be power ballad Down To You but the crowd’s favourite is obviously the single, Girls From Birkenhead which the guys encore with, cue a Celine Dion style crowd singing every word.

All in all this was a triumphant gig for GK and the Renegades, things can only get better for them.
