NME Radar Tour, 28th September 2009, Manchester Academy

Opening up the gig were indie-pop youngsters Yes Giantess and they did a great job of getting the crowd to liven up from the start. Academy 2 isn’t the largest venue in Manchester and it was filling up quickly as the lads played their set. The band from the east coast of the United States really put in the effort with a decent light show to match. It was also great to see members of the band interacting with the crowd during and after the set.

Next up on stage were the LA band Local Natives. Following their American counterparts they were able to continue the trend and keep the crowd involved. The venue was nearing full capacity now and the band loved it. This was the third show in the tour and there was still another twelve shows to go over the next three weeks. The bands debut album is due in November so any exposure they get is quite important right now.

Marina and the Diamonds took to the stage next greeted by a screaming crowd. The girls in the crowd were quickly making their way to front with one female fan saying she was here only for Marina having seen her twice before.

Marina and her band (or ‘fans’ as she likes to call them) the Diamonds, have been making waves in recent months playing large scale festivals such as Leeds, Reading in August and Glastonbury in June.
The Welsh born artist started her set wearing a mask but it was soon gone as she realised she couldn’t actually see her adoring fans. The male contingent of the crowd were also starting to love the new star with one lad shouting out ‘I love you Marina’. Marina will have to get used to the attention though as more and more of the males in the crowd were beginning to take a liking to her.

The music was unique and was well received by the energetic crowd. With her new album due in early 2010 she used the opportunity play her most popular song I Am Not a Robot and also included her upcoming debut single Mowglils Road.

The final act on stage were Londoners, Golden Silvers. The three members of the band were joined by a percussionist, Tommy, for the tour. Just like Marina and the Diamonds they have played both Leeds Festival and Reading Festival this year and of course Glastonbury. They made an impact last year when they played at Glastonbury 2008 going on to win the prestigious new talent competition.

The bands set included songs from their new album True Romance which was released in April of this year. The album has been described as flamboyant and listening to the lads you could see why. The set also included a brand new song, Bonebreaker and concluded with Arrows Of Eros to finish the night off.
